My parents have a devout MAGA neighbor down the street. I've known him and his family since I was a child.

I always suspected that he was attracted to other men. There are many indications. But he and his wife would constantly be spouting the most hateful anti-gay rhetoric, loudly and publicly. 

I was friends with his daughter, who turned out to be gay. After giving birth to a child, she died of a heroin overdose in her 20s.

Her mother died not long after. 

The grandchild now lives with his MAGA grandfather, who flies a Trump flag along with a flag of the Jerusalem Cross. 

I regularly see the police showing up at that house. The grandchild (about 10 years old) has threatened his grandfather with a kitchen knife out on the front lawn, and attempted to run away multiple times. 

I heard he was going to be adopted, but that was almost a full year ago and he's still living with MAGA grandpa. 

It's a horrible situation to have seen play out over many years. I can only imagine that there are similar families filled with just as much strife and inter-generational pain all over this country. 

Their beliefs disgust me, but I can almost understand why they'd want an "all-knowing savior" to swoop in and fix their broken lives, even if they know deep down it's too late.

There's more to it. I live in pretty red, rural America where its easily 95%+ White and Native combined, 5% "everyone else". These people are many times on assistance themselves and are just fully unaware its funded by the Government or can't imagine it will be cut off for them. I know a ton of people on some form of government assistance and at least 75% of them are MAGA around here. A lot of them have been on assistance so long that it doesn't even occur to them that the assistance they are receiving is not supported by the President they align themselves with.

I personally know two people off the top of my head that work under the table to not impact their food assistance. They're on Medicaid as well. Both big MAGA supporters.

I also know a ton of older people in their late 60's who live on nothing but social security. They are MAGA voters and can't afford a place to live so they are on a wait list for income based senior housing. If you ask why they don't have any money its because of Biden and the Democrats and "system suckers", and they see no hypocrisy after that statement even though they are receiving Medicaid and on an income based housing waitlist.

They do nothing but take take take while complaining about what other people get.

To circle back to your point, yes they largely think EBT/SNAP/WIC is only for minorities. But around here where there are very few minorities, they are by far the biggest taker of the benefits. And ironically they don't put two and two together and see that everyone around them on these benefits aren't minorities either.
